Immerse yourself in the tranquil rhythm of "River Flows in You", a dreamy, abstract composition inspired by the flowing beauty of Yiruma’s iconic piano piece. This artwork captures the serene movement of a river through vibrant shades of aqua, teal, and lavender, with floating musical notes and staff lines dancing across the canvas like whispers in water.

Each brushstroke is a gentle wave, each symbol a soft echo of melody—making this piece perfect for music lovers, daydreamers, and anyone who finds peace in art that sings without sound.

Let this artwork bring calm, creativity, and quiet joy to your space—just like the song it was named after.

Tomorrow (Nov 11) we will host three invited guest talks whose work sits at the intersection of art, animation, design, and technology. Please arrive on time to show respect to our guest speakers. You are encouraged to prepare any questions of interest for the Q&A.

  • Beyond Representation: Artistic Data Visualization as Poetic and Critical Practice

Talk Abstract:
Standing at the intersection of science and art, artistic data visualization has emerged in recent years as a significant and rapidly evolving field. In this talk, we will explore the design characteristics of artistic data visualizations, the aesthetic intentions they embody, and their potential to inspire creative practices within our community. These works not only offer a critical reflection on data-driven contemporary society but also hold the potential to serve as tools for envisioning and shaping more hopeful futures.

Biography:
Hanlu Ma is a designer and researcher currently pursuing her PhD at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. She also holds a BFA and an MFA from Tsinghua University, as well as a MSc degree from Politecnico di Milano. Her work bridges science and visual culture, often transforming complex datasets into emotionally resonant narratives and interactive systems. Her projects have been fetured by the Information is Beautiful Awards, ADI Design Index, and ISEA.

      2. Talk on Collage Animation

Talk Abstract:
Collage is an artistic practice that integrates image cutouts to construct visual narratives. This talk presents ongoing work on the creative process of collage-making, highlighting three aspects: (1) introduction of collage animation creation, (2) common challenges identified through interviews with experienced practitioners, and (3) the potential of artificial intelligence to support and extend creative practices in collage animation creation.

Bio:
Jiayi Zhou is a Ph.D. Student at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, under the supervision of Prof. Huamin Qu in the VisLab. Before that, she received her Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng) degree in industrial design, graduating with honors as an Outstanding Graduate from Zhejiang University in 2024.

Her research interests lie at the intersection of Data Visualization and Human-Computer Interaction. She is curious about how creators "connect the dots" in storytelling amidst the explosion of information. She investigates how advanced Artificial Intelligence, including GenAI and computer vision models, can empower the visual storytelling process.

      3. Co-Creating with AI: Collaborative Pathways of AIGC in Film, Art and Design

Talk Abstract:
This talk explores how AI reshapes creativity across narrative, cinematic, and design practices. Drawing from both artistic experimentation and cutting-edge academic research, it presents three interrelated perspectives: first, an AI film project demonstrating the creative potential of human–AI collaboration in storytelling; second, insights from top-tier international HCI research on AI-assisted screenwriting and co-creation; and third, design case studies that reconsider the evolving relationship between designers and AI tools. Together, these perspectives reveal emerging pathways for AIGC to act not only as a tool but as a creative partner across disciplines.

Bio:
Yuying Tang is a PhD student at HKUST (IIP, AIS) supported by the HKPFS. She graduated from Tsinghua University, Central Academy of Fine Arts, and Polytechnic University of Milan. She focuses on Human–Computer Interaction and Human–AI co-creation, exploring AI’s role in creative practices such as screenwriting and design, with award-winning projects and publications at CHI, CSCW, UIST, and SIGGRAPH Asia.

• Date: Nov 11 (during regular class time)
