Art is more than just learning how to draw or paint. It can be a way to tell our stories, understand ourselves and express things that may sometimes be difficult to put into words.

From October to November 2025, Art for Good had the opportunity to conduct a series of art sessions at Mountbatten Vocational School (MVS), bringing together both teachers and students through different creative activities.

Across three sessions, we explored personal reflections, self-identity and sensory experiences through art.

A Moment to Reflect: Stories from the Teachers

We began our first session with the MVS staff, inviting them to put their teaching journeys and personal experiences onto paper.

Through drawing and sharing, the teachers were encouraged to reflect on their experiences with students, memorable moments in their work and the emotions that come with being an educator.

It was a meaningful opportunity to pause amidst their busy schedules, look back on their journeys and share some of the stories that have shaped them as teachers.

Getting to Know Ourselves: Exploring Identity Through Art

Our second session was with the students, where we explored the theme of self-identity through comics and illustrations.

The students were invited to create their own visual introductions, using characters, symbols, drawings and words to represent who they are, what they enjoy and what makes them unique.

We loved seeing the different ways they approached the activity! Through their illustrations, each student had the opportunity to share a little more about themselves and explore their own sense of identity.

Sometimes, a drawing can tell us something about a person that words alone cannot. It was wonderful to see the students expressing their individuality in their own creative ways.

Creating Through Our Senses: Exploring Different Materials

For our final session, we moved away from traditional drawing and explored sensory art using materials such as clay, pipe cleaners, felt and other textured materials.

Rather than focusing on creating a particular finished artwork, the emphasis was on the experience of making. Students were encouraged to touch, mould, shape and experiment with different textures and materials.

The different sensory experiences offered opportunities for creative expression, exploration and moments of calm. We hope that having the freedom to work with their hands and discover different materials gave students another way to express themselves at their own pace.

Art Creates Space for Everyone

Looking back on these sessions, we are grateful for the opportunity to work alongside the teachers and students at Mountbatten Vocational School.

Each session reminded us that everyone has their own stories, identities and ways of expressing themselves. Whether through a drawing, a comic character or simply exploring the texture of clay, art offers different entry points for people to connect with themselves and the world around them.
